The Aviators of ASEC

Eight ASEC people who have also served in the air.
On flying, service, and the systems they help build.

Every year, National Aviation Week gives us a reason to highlight the full community that keeps aircraft in the air: pilots, flight engineers, flight officers, and aircrew alike. This year, eight ASEC aviators told us what flying taught them, in the air and on the job.

In Their Words

A Legacy of Aviation at ASEC

A switch and a handle can do the same job. Only one of them a pilot can find by feel, in the dark, under stress.

JEFF COLVIN

Train like you fight. Build the airplanes and weapons systems that give us the edge when it matters.

MIKE MARRINAN

There’s no red light in the lavatory of the P‑8A. And locking up the aircraft at the end of the day is its own kind of complicated.

LANE DRUMMOND

A flight tester can immediately tell if the card is too busy, has too much erroneous info, or is missing something.

GREG WILLIAMS

Like a bull in a pen at a rodeo when the gate’s about to drop. It’s ready to go. It’s WAITING to go.

JULIA PYRAH

The view is amazing. You have a mostly unobstructed view as far as the eye can see.

WILLIAM ZIRZOW

If you’ve ever seen the movie Black Hawk Down, this was a very similar situation.

ANDY MILLER

You can always get above the clouds to see the sun.
